BRIDFAS VISIT TO PLÖN
Saturday, 12th May 2012

Full details [191 KB] Booking form [32 KB]

This year our outing takes us to Plön with its beautifully situated castle, the former residence of dukes and princes, and its charming parks and narrow streets. The first castle on the Schlossberg was built in the 12th c., and the settlement that developed under its protection close to the major trading route from Lübeck to the north was granted town rights in 1236. When Plön became a residence in the early 17th c. the castle buildings on the hill were started. The independent duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön reverted to the Danish crown after the death of the last duke, Charles Frederick, in 1761. In the middle of the 19th c. the castle was revived as a royal summer resort but it became more lively when after the annexation of Schleswig-Holstein a Prussian cadet school was established in the castle, which was also attended by the imperial princes.

There will be a guided tour of the landscaped gardens on the lake and a visit to the Johanniskirche before lunch. After our guided tour of the town there will be time to discover the charms of the place on your own and have a cup of coffee before the guided visit of the castle. After the second group have finished their tour we shall start our return journey to Hamburg.
